Covenant Environmental Care
Preserving and improving the environment are important at Covenant. We are recycling and paying attention to using resources wisely. We are inspired by our former member Michelle Gardner Quinn.
Michelle Gardner-Quinn grew up at Church of the Covenant and went on to study environmental issues and be involved in environmental activism. Her tragic kidnapping and death is a sadness that we will never forget. Covenant supports her foundation and honors her memory with a tree planted in our garden. Recycling at Covenant is another way to honor Michelle. Please visit Michelle’s website. www.michellesearth.org and for further reference visit www.michellegardnerquinn.com/

Environment will be Covenant's focus for Lent.
Monthly sandwich making for ASPAN (Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network)
Covenant members supply the food and everyone--youth, children and adults make sandwiches and pack 50 lunches for the homeless, on the first Sunday of every month. The bag lunches are delivered on Sunday evening to a group of homeless men and women who gather in a local park.

Outreach to day laborer sites
Along with a consortium of other churches, the Deacons provide groceries for a ministry to day laborers who wait in a local park for work. Covenant members help to serve and greet this open-air congregation of 50-75 men looking for work on selected Saturday mornings. (See the church calendar for specific dates.)
Food collection for AFAC (Arlington Food Assistance Center)
This has been an especially busy year for AFAC. With the downturn in the economy, more needy families have needed this help. Covenant has a several food drives to collect their most needed items-cereal, peanut butter, soup and tuna. One of our Covenant members volunteers at AFAC. They need volunteers to stock the shelves and help families to “shop” for the food they need.
Plant a Row for the Hungry
AFAC is encouraging gardeners to plant an extra row of vegetables and donate the extra harvest to AFAC. Produce can be donated to the Arlington Food Assistance Center at 2707 S. Nelson St., Arlington, VA 22206.
Meals on Wheels
Covenant has seven members who participate in delivering meals. Delivering Meals on Wheels is an excellent opportunity to provide a community service to Arlington’s home-bound. To deliver a route only takes about an hour and a half around lunch time. If you are interested in driving once a month or being an on-call substitute, please call the church office and leave your name with
Ferricia Diggs.
